This course navigates through our seemingly complex and contradictory world of industry and the latest initiatives to blend business and engineering best practice with the intelligent use of digital technology. We critically look at methods to measure value generation, identifying non value-adding activities and create efficiency by doing less to achieve more.
This unique course unlocks the potential of the Asset Management System standards (ISO55001). With the advent of the ISO55000 Asset Management standards and the rapid pace of change in digital technologies, we draw upon operational and maintenance models to align good engineering and business practice to align with ISO55001.

Information technology has been widely used to automate workflow but instead of improving efficiency we are in danger of drowning in data. We will study the theory of constraints and how workflow automation can be properly integrated into Asset Management to produce the efficiencies and insights desired.
Productive operations require identification of a stable basis to focus our improvement planning efforts. Most modern planning is underpinned by Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software. Today’s computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) are often modules of an ERP or EAM system or need to be integrated with such systems. We will identify how digital technologies can be used to integrate data flow with work flow to continually plan, measure and improve our asset’s performance.
We will look at prioritizing competing initiatives rather than trying to do everything at once. In doing so, we will turn our attention to decision analysis; considering the performance measures and benchmark models needed to optimize performance. This brings clarity to the business by allowing focus on the highest value opportunity at any given time.Finally, we will engage participants in a virtual environment to demonstrate how all this can be integrated in a single useable interface for the whole organization.
This course is aimed at decision makers in the process and utilities industries. It is ideal for people that are tasked with cost control whilst also having to achieve production targets. Hence, the course suits management and leadership roles rather than supervisory roles.

- Achieve More by Doing Less
On Day 1, we will provide an overview of the integration of existing practices to align with ISO55001 and create an efficient foundation to build from, rather than ‘reinventing the wheel’. We will propose methods to measure value generation such that any non-value adding activity can be identified, creating the room for improvement by doing less to achieve more.
In this way, we avoid being too busy and allow more time to improve. This is perhaps the most important takeaway from the course, you cannot improve if you are too busy to do so. Most improvement initiatives including digital enterprise and asset management fail for this very simple reason. Too many people try to add more using the latest tools or need to comply with a new standard, rather than using the opportunity to remove the unnecessary.
We will introduce ISO 55001 as the relevant Standard for Asset Management Systems, a relatively recent innovation superseding PAS 55-1/2 2004. Business Process Engineering as practiced and promoted by the various management consultancies, including the Asset Management Council (AMC) will be the main focus of the day. It is by blending technical proficiency with business process engineering that we will achieve value focused outcomes.
On Day 3, we move on to consider the use of digital technology. The intelligent use of digital tools to create a digital enterprise is all about integration not addition.
Many of the applications we already use in our organizations can be integrated together to eliminate duplication of data and reduce the number of interfaces. We want the information and automation provided by the application software, not the replication of databases and hardware. These existing applications can then be complimented by predictive analysis to change the information generated into intelligence.
Day 4 will carefully consider the need for metadata structure to allow integration and accurate analysis. We will consider the analyses we need to optimize our performance. We will focus on automated improvement, or at least the automated generation of improvement opportunities. We will explore some of the many applications that are available online.
Day 5Day 5 is all about the outcome, it is about the digital future. We interact within our new digital future by providing participants with a hands-on opportunity to use a simulated virtual environment that shows the cascade from company strategy through policy to planning and competency which will be complimented by performance measurement and improvement analysis. We want participants to take away an understanding of the impact the correct use of automation can make to asset management.
